alsa in kernel :

    select appropriate driver in generic, isa, pci, usb or pcmcia (lspci / lspnp / discover)
    Open Sound System as module
    OSS Sound Module as module


If not detected when hard compiled try as module then try adjusting settings in /etc/modprobe.d/sound using lspnp,lspci and alsaconf

addgroup $USER audio to allow user to use the sounddevice

if xmms etc seems to be working, but you hear nothing, check volumes with alsamixer and try 0 for sound card 1, 1 for sound card 2, etc
amixer set -c 0 Master 70 unmute
amixer set -c 0 PCM 70 unmute
amixer set -c 0 CD 70 unmutie
